Hardee's Infantry Tactics CD-Rom
Published in CD-ROM by H-Bar Enterprises (January, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent resource for Civil War reenactors and historians.Hardee's Tactics is an excellent resource for reenactors and military historians interested in the tactical mindset of both North and South during the War Between the States. The book is a synthesis of the Napoleonic/West Point tradition of formal battlefield tactics of the period. The book became widely used by both Union and Confederate forces as the handbook for teaching the Infantryman's battlefield maneuvers. It was the result of William Joseph Hardee's tactical scholarship in France, and his career as a United States Army officer before Lincoln provoked the initiation of hostilities at Ft Sumter. Shortly after the onslaught of war, Hardee resigned his U.S. Army commision and began his service in defense of his native state, Georgia. He would rise to the rank rank of General, and serve in defense of the South at Shiloh, Murfreesborough, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, Jonesborough, Savannah, and Bentonville.

I Stole Freddie Mercury's Birthday Cake: And Other Autobiographical Confessions
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (February, 1997)
Average review score:

Authentic South LondonI knew Hardee personally and am referred to in this work... it was great to re-live the spirit of South London in the 1950s and beyond and to see how a "bad boy" ended-up making good. A great read, with lots of amusing anecdotes...

obscurity with scintillant results!Fans of earlier work by Mike Mosher ( "Orwell for Beginners", etc.) and the poetry and picture books of Norman Mallory ( Rented Rooms"," Umbrella Black: Fetish Psychiatrist" etc.) will marvel at this powerful and whimsical conjunction of words and images. The volume also contains an illustrated story by "Geo" and "Nature" photographer/ writer Sharon Hardee.

General William J. Hardee: Old Reliable (Southern Biography Series)
Published in Paperback by Louisiana State University Press (October, 1992)
Average review score:

A biography just like "Old Reliable" himselfHughes' biography of Hardee is not unlike its subject: competent, professional, and unspectacular. The focus is appropriately on Hardee's Civil War career. The post-war years receive especially light treatment. Hughes does an excellent job of assessing Hardee's performance during each campaign and battle. To his great credit, he is more inclined than most biographers to be critical of his subject when warranted. Hardee's personality emerges less vividly from the book than we might wish. Perhaps this is due to a lack of insightful source material, or to the fact that Hardee himself lacked the charisma to be an ideal subject. Whatever the reason, you won't find Hardee particularly likeable or loathesome, but you will learn a lot about his role in the Civil War.

Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics: For the Exercise and Maneuvers of Troops When Acting As Light Infantry or Riflemen (The West Point Military Library)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (June, 1955)
Average review score:

Confusing, occasionally useful original sourceHardee's Tactics was a training manual reputedly widely used during the Civil War. It's very helpful for the historian in discussing the duties of NCO's and the composition of the company in formation. It rapidly becomes completely incomprehensible when describing maneuvers and weapons handling. I can only imagine that whoever actually used this started with a good visual picture of what Hardee was talking about. There are contemporary anecdotes about inexperienced officers getting themselves in trouble with this book (e.g. the "Piroute, piroute!" scene I've read in some memoir or other) and one can certainly see why.
